Sachi Vaat: A Podcast For Seekers

At Sachi Vaat, we believe that truth is a thing we distill over time, a shifting kaleidoscope through which we try to glimpse the divine, one that we examine through repeated interactions with ourselves and with one another. If you’re looking for black and white answers, this is not the place for you. But if you’re looking for complex conversations, nuanced takes, and space for uncertainty, we are your people. This is a space for honest conversations about the world around us, about the systems we live in and how they impact our day-to-day, grounded in Islam and a deep commitment to social justice.

Teaser: Being a Person of Faith

In honour of Laylat-al-Qadr, Salima grapples with what it means to be a person of faith in these dark days. Though it was originally written and delivered to her community on Laylat-al-Qadr in 2024, this piece continues to be relevant, so Salima has recorded it as the first of our Sal's Vaats.

About the Podcast

Every episode of Sahchi Vaat will start with the heart of the episode, which we lovingly call Sal’s Vaat.  Anyone who has had the chance to engage Sal in a deep conversation about faith, life, meaning, or purpose knows that she has a wealth of knowledge, drawn from many, many years of formal education and a lifetime of being deeply embedded in communities that she has lovingly served. So many of the people Sal has touched have experienced significant “aha moments” that have deeply impacted their lives, and the overwhelming response to these moments has been “more people need to hear this, in this way.”

Ultimately, Sal’s Vaats are an ode to the oldest of human traditions, where we get to listen to wisdom keepers share their knowledge with us. The khutba, the Shakespearean monologue, Ted talks - they all fulfill the same function (though perhaps to varying degrees!).

But what is consistent throughout is that the message being delivered belongs to the speaker - it comes from their expertise, their lived experience, their synthesis, and ultimately their own understanding of the workings of the world. That continues to be true here. These perspectives are ours - they do not belong to or speak for any institution or organization. They are ours and we own them wholeheartedly and without reservation.

In our full episodes, Sal’s Vaat will be followed by a conversation between Salima and Munir about what she has shared: a chance to dig deeper and work on our ever shifting kaleidoscope to distill as much truth as we can. We hope to be joined in these conversations by friends who are able to sit in the grey space, letting our uncertainties mould one another into something humbler, kinder, gentler, and wiser.

Join us as we sit in the discomfort and joy of finding our way through this thing we call life.

Meet the Team

Sachi Vaat is co-hosted by Salima Versi & Munir Virani

Translations and Terminology

We come from a very multi-lingual world, so you'll probably hear a lot of words in our episodes that are pulled from a variety of different languages. Our show and segment titles are no exception. While we won't always translate every word, we did think it might be helpful to share a few.

Sachi Vaat

Sachi vaat is colloquially used in our world in a very similar way as 'true that.' It seemed appropriate for a podcast about the world and meaning and purpose, but it's also a nod to the ways in which sometimes our most casual conversations can be the most meaningful.

Sal's Vaat

Sal's vaat literally means Sal's Chat, much like a Ted Talk. Very fitting given that Salima has been called a 'vaaturi' (chatterbox) all her life. But it's also a slightly cheeky play on 'salwaat', a traditional Muslim prayer invoking Allah's blessings on Prophet Muhammad (SAAW) and his family. It is often a part of daily prayers and is sometimes used at the beginning of homilies and sermons, so it seemed especially appropriate for our purposes here.
